Amaechi Muonagor, the renowned Nigerian actor, has passed away at the age of 61. Tony Oneweek, a celebrated singer and cousin to the late actor, confirmed his passing on Instagram.
Amaechi succumbed to complications from kidney failure, marking the end of a prolonged health battle. In November 2023, he disclosed that he had experienced paralysis on the left side of his body for several months, a condition that arose while he was on a film set.
His cousin, Tony Muonagor, had previously revealed that Amaechi grappled with kidney disease, diabetes, and stroke, necessitating regular dialysis and physiotherapy at the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital (NAUTH) in Nnewi, Anambra.
Born on August 20, 1962, Amaechi hailed from Idemili, Anambra state, and was married with four children. Following his youth service in 1989, he began his career at the News Agency of Nigeria before transitioning to acting, where he gained prominence with his portrayal of Akunatakasi in ‘Taboo 1’, his debut film.
Amaechi’s passing comes shortly after the demise of another Nollywood icon, John ‘Mr Ibu’ Okafor, who died from cardiac arrest on March 2 at Evercare Hospital in Lagos. Mr Ibu, aged 62, had battled a severe illness for months before his passing.
