Jon Batiste, the Grammy-winning US singer and multi-instrumentalist, has revealed that he recorded “half of my next album” during a recent visit to Nigeria.

The 37-year-old Louisiana-born artist was in the country as part of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation’s (BMGF) ongoing commitment to Africa’s development.

Speaking at an event on Tuesday, Batiste shared his experience of recording music with various Nigerian artists over the past 10 days, which he described as incredibly productive.

“I probably have half of my next album already,” Batiste said, reflecting on the range of creative experiences he encountered during his stay.

Batiste also expressed his deep admiration for Nigerian culture and cuisine, particularly Jollof rice, which left a lasting impression on him.

“The 10 days I have been here feels like a month. It feels like so much has happened. The flavors you feel when you eat it are visceral,” he remarked.

Batiste emphasized the spiritual connection he feels through music, noting that it has the power to transcend mere entertainment.

“Music can create something greater than entertainment. That is why I feel called to be here. I do not even know what the future holds, I am just grateful to Mr. Gates’ Foundation.”

Batiste’s time in Nigeria has had a profound impact on him, both personally and creatively, as he looks forward to completing his new album with inspiration drawn from his experiences in the country.
