Ademola Lookman has expressed his excitement and pride after being crowned the 2024 CAF Men’s Player of the Year, capping off an extraordinary year for the Atalanta and Super Eagles star.
Lookman, who has enjoyed a phenomenal 2024, becomes the sixth Nigerian to claim Africa’s most prestigious individual football award, joining the likes of Nwankwo Kanu, Rashidi Yekini, and Victor Ikpeba.
A Year to Remember
The 27-year-old winger began his remarkable year by playing a key role in Nigeria’s impressive run to the final of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Côte d’Ivoire. While the Super Eagles narrowly missed out on lifting the trophy, Lookman’s standout performances did not go unnoticed.
His incredible form continued at club level as he starred for Atalanta in their historic UEFA Europa League triumph in May. Lookman etched his name into European football history by scoring a hat-trick in the final against Bayer Leverkusen, securing Atalanta’s first-ever European title.

Speaking from the stage after receiving the award, a visibly elated Lookman gave thanks to God, his teammates, and his supporters.
“I want to thank Almighty God for everything that He’s been doing in my life, He’s been blessing me with.”
He continued, acknowledging the role of his teammates and family:
“I want to thank the Presidents, all my teammates, club and country, for their support and the love that they give me. This award is for me, my family, my nation, and to be recognised as the best player in Africa is something incredible. I am extremely proud.”
Lookman also reflected on his journey, highlighting how he turned past failures into a source of strength:
“Just over four years ago, I failed in front of the world. Fast forward four years, I’m the best player in Africa.”
Offering words of encouragement to the younger generation, Lookman added:
