Nigerian ace singer and performer Ahmed Ololade, popularly known as Asake, has broken a record previously held by his colleague Omah Lay on the music streaming platform Spotify with his latest single, “Active“.

The YBNL-Empire artist, who recently announced his third studio album Lungu Boy—expected to feature heavyweights like Wizkid, Stormzy, and others—surprised fans with a last-minute release. The unexpected drop was his song “Active,” featuring American superstar Travis Scott, which was released on Wednesday, August 7th, 2024, alongside its official video.

In a remarkable display of dominance, Asake’s “Active,” produced by Nigerian heavyweight producer and DJ Sarz, set a new record by becoming the biggest debut for an Afrobeats song in Spotify history. The track amassed 1.56 million streams on its first day, reaching #108 on the global Spotify chart. This achievement dethroned Omah Lay and Justin Bieber’s “Attention,” which previously held the record with 1.53 million streams on its first day of release in 2022. The two-year reign was finally halted on August 7, 2024.
