Eight signs you could be in a toxic relationship

0

While no relationship is perfect, a relationship should be a source of joy, not frustration. A relationship is toxic when your well-being is threatened in some way — physically, emotionally, and psychologically.

Signs of toxicity can be subtle, making it difficult to notice the red flags.

Here are some signs to help you recognize a toxic relationship:

Toxic communication

Good communication is the heartbeat of a healthy relationship.  So if you and your partner find it hard to communicate, it might be a sign of toxicity.

Instead of open and mutual communication, you experience hostile and bad ones. Where there is no mutual respect during communication but criticism, yelling, name-calling, or sometimes silent treatment.

Feeling unsafe

If you feel unsafe and uncomfortable with your partner, that’s a major red flag.

It doesn’t have to be physical only. Do you feel safe with your partner emotionally? Can you express yourself openly without being scared? Does your voice matter? Do you always try to filter your words while talking?

If the answer to the question is ‘No’ then that’s a sign of toxicity because a healthy relationship gives space for people to be themselves and comfortable. Partners can be vulnerable without fear, and tell each other the good and the bad.

So if you’re in a constant state of physical and emotional insecurity around your partner, you are not in a healthy relationship.

Lack of support

In a healthy relationship, there is a mutual desire to see each other win and feel that you have a best friend who will always be there through the wins and disappointments. But in a toxic situation, you feel the opposite.

It’s a toxic relationship if every achievement becomes a competition and you don’t feel supported or encouraged.

If you’re hesitant or afraid to share the good news with your partner, perhaps out of fear of his or her reaction, or if you hit a wall of negativity every time you’re in celebration mode, then you have to rethink the relationship.

Controlling behavior

It’s not a healthy relationship when your partner dominates all your actions or when you feel pressured to do exactly what you’re told to even when it will affect you — or you don’t want to.

This behavior might be because of jealousy or lack of trust, but they can also suggest a need for control — both of which can contribute to relationship toxicity.

It’s a relationship between two people so it is healthy when the parties make decisions together and put each other into consideration while at it.

Lack of self-care

Signs of a toxic relationship aren’t all about your partner’s behavior but also some changes in your personal life.

Letting go of your self-care habits and self-confidence can be a major sign that your relationship is unhealthy.

Have you noticed withdrawing from activities you enjoy or caring less about yourself, your health, and your appearance?

This might happen because you already feel drained by the relationship.

Patterns of disrespect

Disrespect comes in different ways in a toxic relationship.

It can come in form of your partner disregarding your feeling, undermining you, speaking down at you in public, forgetting important agreements, and showing up late.

All of these and more are signs you should be wary of because they can turn out to be signs of toxicity.

Feeling drained

Your relationship is definitely toxic if you constantly feel drained physically and emotionally.

Do you feel you’re giving your all and not getting anything in return? Do you do all the heavy lifting in the relationship?

It isn’t meant to be, relationships require hard work from both parties to make it healthy and worthy.

Loneliness

If you’re in a relationship and you always feel neglected, isolated, and lonely, then you’re not in a healthy relationship.

You and your partner already lost the true sense of intimacy and personal connection.

However, 24 hours after the votes were cast in most of the polling units across the country, Nigerians are still eagerly anticipating the commencement of results collation, especially for the presidential election.

This seemingly long wait has resulted in cynicism among a section of Nigerians who believed something untoward might be afoot.

Joining the conversation, Falz posted an Instagram story on Sunday, February 26, 2023, encouraging voters to be vigilant as INEC gets itself ready to announce the results.

The rapper turned activist also warned that Nigerians will revolt against the commission if the results don’t correlate with the ones recorded at the polling units by voters.

Falz’s message read:

“If INEC announce any result wey no match, we go calculate all by ourselves.

“Let’s just start consolidating final results from our polling units.

Burna Boy, the Afro-Fusion singer, has appealed to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to ensure the presidential election results are not altered.

The presidential election was held on Saturday with a total of 18 candidates contesting for Nigeria’s highest office.

Millions of Nigerians took to their polling units to cast their votes in favor of their preferred candidates.

There were, however, reports of electoral violence in some polling units across the country.

There were also claims that the results of some polling units were altered.

On Sunday, the music star took to Instagram to plead with the electoral commission to ensure the choices of the electorate count.

Burna Boy also urged INEC to not allow itself to be used as a tool for the manipulation of the election results.

“Let Nigeria decide o! @inecnigeria! No try any result magic 🇳🇬,” the singer wrote in pidgin English.

The singer’s remark comes a few hours after he was called out by Nigerians on social media to lend his voice and demand free and fair elections.

R. Kelly gets extra 20-year jail term for child porn crimes

0

American singer Robert Sylvester Kelly, known as R. Kelly, has gotten an additional 20-year jail term.

Kelly is already serving a 30-year sentence for racketeering and sex trafficking after being found guilty by a Brooklyn jury in a previous federal trial.

According to the Chicago judge’s decision, all but one year of the new sentence will be served concurrently with the old one. His lawyer, Jennifer Bonjean, is appealing both of Kelly’s federal convictions.

The initial convictions

R. Kelly was convicted in September 2022 on six of the 13 counts alleged in the Chicago trial: three counts of producing child pornography and three of enticement of a minor.

A federal jury cleared the singer of seven additional counts, including the accusation that he interfered with justice during a prior trial. A jury found the singer not guilty in the 2008 child pornography case after Kelly and two former collaborators were accused of manipulating the proceedings.

One year after Kelly’s conviction in New York for routinely enlisting girls and women for sex, he was found guilty on federal charges in Chicago. As the first significant sex assault trial where the majority of the accusers were black women, that verdict was generally seen as a turning point for the #MeToo movement.

It was also the first time Kelly was charged with the abuse of women and children, which had long been rumored.

2023 Elections: 5 Songs that should be on your election day playlist

0

On Saturday, 25th February 2023, Nigerians across the 36 states and the federal capital territory are heading to the polls to elect a new president. Here are 5 songs that should be on your election day playlist.

If you’re set to exercise your franchise, music is a good way to stay entertained while you sparing the hours required to carry out your civic duty.

Here are 10 songs that can help you stay motivated and entertained on election day.

1. ‘4 Instance’ by 2Baba

This classic record draws attention to the social and political issues plaguing Nigeria and which has continued to relegate it to the backdrop in the comity of nations.

This song will inspire you to not only vote but also to ensure your vote counts as you make your contribution to salvaging the country from its current state.

2. ‘Shey Na Like This’ by Wande Coal

This song asks a burning question that requires a sincere retrospective response from Nigerians. With the country currently far from where it should be, this song will inspire you to go out and vote in the hope of having a new leadership that will steer Nigeria in the right direction.

3. ‘Jaga Jaga’ by Eedris Abdulkareem

When Eedris Abdulkareem released ‘Jaga Jaga,’ the single resonated with Nigerians and quickly became a hit.

18 years after ‘Jaga Jaga,’ Nigeria has suffered a further decline, and the poverty rate has significantly increased. ‘Jaga jaga’ captures the state of the nation in 2004 and it does today, and this painful lack of progress should inspire you to go out and vote.

4. ‘Jailer’ by Asa

Asa’s ‘Jailer’ is a sober reminder of the metaphorical jail that’s Nigeria and how Nigerians are locked in a psychological, economic, social, and religious jail.

This song should spur you to grab your PVC and head to your polling unit in a bid to free Nigeria from the ideological, economic, and religious incarceration in the hands of the political elite.

5. ‘Mr. President’ by African China

This song is still as fresh in memory and relevant today as it was when it was released in 2006. ‘Mr. President’ was African China’s reminder to the political class to govern rightly and ensure there’s justice, fairness, and equity in the land irrespective of status, religion, or creed.

It should be a reminder of why you need to vote and demand good governance.

Erik Ten Hag Reacts to Manchester United Europa League Round of 16 Draw

1

Erik Ten Hag has given his opinion on Manchester United’s Round of 16 Europa League draw against Real Betis.

The Red Devils booked a spot in the next round of the competition following their 2-1 victory over Barcelona at Old Trafford. He said the club will give their best in the game so they can progress to the next round of the competition.

I just heard and we played them in the pre-season after the winter break, and you know what you get from Spanish football. We faced it yesterday. It is a playing team, a skillful team, so we will have to play our best. We also played Real Sociedad this season and so we know, only when you play your best, you have a chance to survive and to get into the next round. So, we will go deeper when we face them. First, we have to put the energy and the focus into the next games, and games [after that], because first, we have the Carabao Cup, the FA Cup, and then the Premier League.

Ten Hag is on the verge of winning a title for Manchester United when he faces Newcastle United on Sunday, February 26th in the final of the Carabao Cup.
