Kenny Blaq: I Brought the Wizkid Vibe into Music Comedy

Date:

Kenny Blaq, one of Nigeria’s most celebrated comedians, has recently opened up about his journey in the music comedy scene, clarifying a common misconception that he pioneered the genre in Nigeria. While he’s widely recognized for popularizing music comedy, Kenny Blaq humbly credits earlier artists like the late Gbenga Adeboye, CD John, and others for laying the foundation.

In a recent interview with Hip TV, Kenny Blaq reflected on his contributions to the genre, emphasizing that his unique approach is what sets him apart.

“Because of the way I did music comedy, a lot of people have the impression that I brought music comedy to Nigeria. Some people think that I started music comedy as a genre,” Kenny Blaq explained. “But they were music comedians like the late Gbenga Adeboye, Funky Otong, MC Miracle, Maleke, and the late CD John.”

Despite not being the genre’s originator, Kenny Blaq believes his distinct style has helped shape music comedy into what it is today. “I brought the Wizkid and Davido vibe into it. And I was able to do different genres of music with my comedy,” he shared.

Kenny Blaq’s approach involves blending various genres of music with his comedy, making his performances dynamic and relatable to a broader audience. Unlike his predecessors, who focused on specific cultural music styles like Igbo or Yoruba, Kenny Blaq’s versatility allowed him to create mashups, covers, and stories that resonated with diverse audiences.

This fresh and innovative approach has undoubtedly played a significant role in his success. By infusing his performances with the vibrant energy of contemporary Afrobeats stars like Wizkid and Davido, Kenny Blaq has created a niche for himself within the comedy landscape. His work has not only entertained but also bridged the gap between music and comedy in a way that appeals to both old and new generations of fans.

“I did not start music comedy but I can say that I’m one of those that have made music comedy strong in this part of the world,” Kenny Blaq concluded.

In an industry where staying relevant requires constant evolution, Kenny Blaq’s ability to integrate music’s ever-changing landscape with comedy has solidified his place as a key figure in Nigerian entertainment. While he may not have been the first to combine music and comedy, his innovative approach has certainly made a lasting impact, bringing a fresh and contemporary vibe that continues to inspire and entertain.
