Newcastle United has provided an update on the availability of Sandro Tonali, who has been suspended for the past ten months due to a breach of betting rules.
Tonali, who joined Newcastle from AC Milan in July 2023 for £55 million, was sanctioned by the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) in October 2023. The 24-year-old midfielder was found guilty of violating rules that prohibit players from betting on football events organized by the FIGC, UEFA, and FIFA during his time in Italy. His suspension came after he had made 12 appearances for Newcastle.
In the latest update, Newcastle received confirmation from the FIGC that Tonali’s ban will conclude on August 27, 2024. This means his first game back could potentially be in the Carabao Cup against Nottingham Forest, depending on when the match is scheduled during the week of his return.
The club’s statement read:
“The club has received formal confirmation from the Federazione Italiana Guioco Calico (FIGC) that the player’s sporting sanction will run up to and including Tuesday, 27th August.”
