My Top 5 Songs Off Burna Boy’s “I Told Them” Album

Date:

Burna Boy released his seventh studio album he tagged, “I Told Them” on the 25th of August 2023. The album dropped on the back of controversies related to the African Giant. The singer made claims that Afrobeats has no substance and this caused a backslash in the entertainment industry. Did that stop Burna Boy from dropping the album? Hell NO. If anyone rides the waves of controversy like skiing, it’s Oluwa Burna.

I Told Them Is…

I told them is such a beautiful album and it shows Burna Boy’s arrogance and confidence. It shows the pride of a man who knows who he is and just how far he has come from nothing. A man who sees how beautiful where he is going is and already has the map to getting there.

The album has a lot more of hip hop vibes in songs like Sitting On Top The World, Big 7, Cheat On Me and even City Boys. He’s definitely strengthening his strong hold on the American market. This is truly an “Afrofusion” as he calls his sound.

It’s difficult to pick out just 5 songs from any of Burna Boy’s album and so I’ll leave out the pre released songs before the album officially dropped. Songs like Big 7, Sitting On Top The World, Cheat on Me and Talibans. At least two of these songs would have been on my countdown but because I’ve listened to them more, I tend to have some form of bias.

With that said, here are my top 5 songs on “I Told Them“;

5. Thanks Feat J Cole:

A lot of people will absolutely dread this song because it feels like it’s a diss track for Nigerians. Burna Boy told a story on this one on a laid back beat. If you’ve actually listened to this song a lot of times, you will find out just how infectious the hook is. I find myself shouting, “is this the motherfucking thanks I get” at almost every time I just think of the song. I expected a lot more from the song though with such a great rapper on the song. It’s on the list because it stays rent free in my head.

4. On Form:

Burna was really on form when he made this song. This one will make you shake your body even if you’re in a position you can’t stand and dance. A great tune to just party with. Some drinks, your guys and all the party elements. “Ahhhh e no go tire me”, really great song.

3. If I’m Lying:

He probably added something on this one. When Burna Boy goes full R&B, a masterpiece is what comes next. If I’m lying is a masterpiece. Odogwu himself said this could be one of his best songs ever and I absolutely concur. What he did with his voice in this one is close to a very good audio hypnosis. You could play this in the background when apologizing to your girl. Great song all round and it’s my number 3 on the list.

2. City Boys:

This is the most viral song in the whole album. This song is already global and everyone wants to do the City Boys challenge on social media. The African Giant flowed through this one seamlessly on this one. The video was clean too, Burna brought out all of em City Boys.

1. Tested, Approved & Trusted:

This is the best song on the whole album. Tested, approved and trusted was next level Burna Boy. The song just makes you feel good and value love even more. He definitely put something in this song because you’d definitely replay it every single time it comes on.

What are your favorite songs on this album?
